After looking at many sample images, reviews, and tests of the Sony a7 series, the Pentax K-1, and Nikon and Canon full-frame cameras, I chose the a7 for its combination of a great sensor, a compact body, and in 2017, a very reasonable price. If you use a Sony a7/a7s/a7r you have to carry a tripod more often and achieving focus with longer lenses is a bit harder.
